ICC English Teacher
T
his time we are honored to invite our English teacher, Bilal Abdullah, to introduce the typical music form and characteristics from his hometown, the United States. Mr. Bilal narrates the history and culture of Jazz, and as for himself, he not only is interested in Jazz culture, but also likes listening to the Jazz music. Additionally, Mr. Bilal claims that generally, jazz music is popular among African Americans because it was originally created by them, so they can catch up with the rhythm easily.
W
hat is JAZZ?
JAZZ
music was originated in late nineteenth century. The music basis was Blues and Ragtime.

Jazz is particularly about improvising performance. For instance, Shuffle, the basic rhythm of jazz, combines African culture with European custom, which becomes a typical example. Before the twentieth century, jazz music had developed for over ten years, mainly concentrated in the New Orleans jazz. The concentration shifted to Chicago after 1917, and nowadays jazz is prevalent worldwide. There are some main styles of jazz: the New Orleans jazz, rock, Latin, Free jazz, etc.
Jazz is a musical art form that originated around the beginning of the 20th century in Black communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions. The style's West African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, call-and-response, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and the swung note of ragtime. From its early development until the present, jazz has also incorporated music from 19th and 20th century American popular music, which were based on European music traditions. The word “jazz” began as a West Coast slang term of uncertain derivation and was first used to refer to music in Chicago in about 1915.
Jazz has, from its early 20th century inception, spawned a variety of sub genres, including New Orleans Dixieland dating from the early 1910s, big band-style swing from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s, a variety of Latin-jazz fusions such as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz from the 1950s and 1960s, and jazz-rock fusion from the 1970s and later developments such as acid jazz.

Jazz comes from the Black’s culture. It’s the combination of syncopation. One of the most familiar types of jazz is called Blues. Like the paean and work songs, its spirit is freedom. It is created for people whose spirit is of an unconstrained level pursuing the material life in order to enjoy the spirit of the rich.
