樂隊介紹

無束樂隊是一支來自舊金山，由舊金山和成都的音樂人組成的世界樂融和樂隊。吉他手馬克在2004年第一次到成都旅行時受中國民族音樂旋律啟發，開始把中國民族音樂與他熟悉的自由爵士結合譜曲。他與大衛在舊金山因為對融合音樂的喜愛而結識。2011年他們兩人同另外兩位音樂人在舊金山組成了大馬大樂隊，演奏中國風融合音樂。在大馬大結束後，他們組建了無束樂隊，演奏原創作品以及融合風音樂，並於2016年邀請石琳加入樂團。

無束樂隊的音樂里融合了美國自由爵士和放克搖滾元素與中國民歌、戲劇、搖滾。我們同時也尋找與印第安人音樂的聯繫。樂隊的原創歌曲如 “與月之眼共舞”、“閃電回旋” 、“泰”、從自然和朴實的人文中尋找靈感。樂隊的中國融合風歌曲如 “康定情歌” 、”太阳出来喜洋洋”、“好汉歌” 通過融合爵士和弦、諧音、和唱法演奏中國民歌和搖滾歌曲，用音樂展現出一幅中西融合的風景畫。

Band Introduction

Unbound is a San Francisco based free-jazz world fusion music ensemble with members from San Francisco and Chengdu. When Marc first visited Chengdu, China in 2004, he was inspired by Chinese folk melodies and started to combine it with free jazz to compose. He met Dave Mihaly in San Francisco who also shares the love for fusion music. Together with two other musicians in San Francisco, they formed a Chinese jazz-fusion band DaMaDa in 2011. When DaMaDa ended, they started Unbound to perform original compositions and fusion music. In 2016, they invited Lin to join the ensemble.

Unbound play world music consisting of jazz fusion, free jazz, and American funk rock mixed with Chinese melodies from folk to opera to rock. We also explore connections to Native American music. Our original compositions, such as Dancing with Moon Eyes, Flashbacks and Lightning, and Tai, are influenced by nature and authentic human spirits. In our Chinese fusion music such as Kang Ding Love Song, The Cheerful Sunshine, and Goodfella, we combine our music into a unique sonic painting where East meets West.        

 

個人介紹

馬克·施密特  现居美國舊金山，是無束樂隊的吉他手和演唱。他來自美國威斯康辛州，在位於密爾沃基的威斯康辛音樂學院學習爵士理論和爵士吉他，師從 喬治·普利切（George Pritchett）和傑克·格拉索爾（Jack Grassell ）。他也曾於位於紐約伍德斯托克的創意音樂學院學習，師從卡爾·伯格（Karl Berger）、安東尼·布蘭克頓（Anthony Braxton）等音樂人。

馬克表演過多種音樂，包括放客、搖滾、流行、融合音樂、傳統爵士以及他鍾愛的自由爵士樂。他也喜愛現代舞，並同蒲爾羅·昂巴更（Pearl Ubungen）團隊的音樂人和舞蹈家合作演出。他的譜曲在舊金山地區被廣泛的演出和錄製。他曾在中國風爵士融合樂隊大馬大（DaMaDa）擔任吉他手六年，在最近成為無束樂隊的一部分。在無束樂隊，馬克致力於把多種音樂元素表現在新的演出裡。

 

Musicians Biography

Marc Schmitz is the guitarist and vocalist in Unbound and resides in San Francisco. He is also a composer. Originally from Wisconsin, he studied jazz guitar/jazz theory with George Pritchett (Buddy Rich Big Band) in Milwaukee and Jack Grassell at the Wisconsin College Conservatory of Music. He also attended the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York where he studied under musician such as Karl Berger and Anthony Braxton.

Marc has performed with many groups ranging from funk to rock/pop to fusion to straight ahead jazz and his favorite, improvisational “free” music. He has performed with the Pearl Ubungen Dancers and Musicians and enjoys working with contemporary dance. Many of his compositions have been performed and recorded in the SF area. After over six years with DaMaDa, a Chinese jazz-fusion band, he has now become part of the trio, Unbound, where he is able to combine all of the musical influences in his life into Unbound’s performances.

Dave Mihaly is the drummer in Unbound. He is also a composer. He has toured the world with his own group––the Shimmering Leaves Ensemble, as well as Jolie Holland, Sean Hayes, Ara Anderson, and Jon Birdsong. He has made 4 records with his own group, and has a 5th album coming out on Calar Records; a suite for Muhammad Ali. Dave is from New Jersey. He has played in many groups in San Francisco, New Jersey, and New York, and has appeared on over 50 recordings.

Dave has been teaching drums, piano, guitar, bass and mallet percussion since 1977. He has been on the staff of New Traditions School, the San Francisco Video Drum Clinic, and the Bird School of Music (all in San Francisco, California) and has conducted speaking engagements, lectures and musical demonstrations/seminars in the U.S. and Europe.

她多次於諾克斯學院的國際嘉年華、蓋爾斯堡米格拉卡迪餐廳（Mcgillicuddy’s Bar），和舊金山的噪聲唱片（Noise Record）店隨團演出。

 

Lin Shi is the pianist and vocalist in Unbound. Originally from Chengdu, she studied keyboard, classical piano, and vocal from musicians at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. She also learned Peking opera from her grandma. She attended Knox College in Illinois, US and studied jazz piano and jazz drum with percussionist and pianist Kevin Hart. She also played with David Hoffman’s jazz combo at jazz night in Galesburg, Illinois. 

She has performed multiple times at Knox College International Festival, Mcgillicuddy’s Bar in Galesburg, and Noise Record in San Francisco with her music groups.

創作理念及音樂影響

作為舊金山走出的樂隊，無束樂隊深受這座城市的風格影響，希望用音樂傳播包容、多元、以及創意。 樂隊的創作靈感來源於中美多種音樂元素，包括自由爵士、放客、搖滾、 民歌。樂隊的音樂尤其受Ornette Coleman, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, John McLaughlin, John Coltrane 等爵士、融合樂大家的影響。無束樂隊的音樂也受到中國道家文化影響，用音樂體現天人合一，在创作中用節奏与速度表现不同的音乐主题。

在探索不同地域音樂風格的過程中，無束樂隊致力於發現不同時空音樂之間的聯繫。比如在比較印地安人音樂和中國民歌的過程中，我們發現兩類音樂都廣泛運用五音音階。因此，樂隊在演奏中運用五音音階作為即興音樂的基準，以此作為兩種音樂的紐帶。

Creative Inspiration and Musical Influences

As a San Francisco-based band, Unbound is deeply influenced by its city’s style, hoping to use music to embrace openness, diversity, and creativity. The band’s inspiration comes from various types of U.S. and Chinese music elements, including free jazz, funk, rock, and folk. In particular, the band is influenced by great jazz musicians such as Ornette Coleman, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, John McLaughlin, and John Coltrane. Unbound’s music is also influenced by Taoism, creating music to express the unity of nature and human spirits and depicting different musical themes using velocity and speed in composition.

 

Unbound is devoted to explore the connections among music from space and time. For example, we found some Chinese folk music and Native American music use pentatonic scale. Therefore, in our performance we improvise based on the pentatonic scale and make the connections between these two music types.
