Beginning of the story: Clark, here we come!
"Hey girl, I saw our tournament participation sheet of this year, and you are "maybe" for Boon Rockstar, so will you go? It's a very high-level competition in Asia, you will definitely learn a lot from the game. Come come! "
At the beginning of 2018, Sirens confirmed to be the only women's team from China to compete in WUCC this year. To prepare for this game, coach and captains set up Boon Rockstar tournament as one of the most important games for practice. And this is also the first international tournament out of China that Sirens had ever competed.
While things do not go that smoothly. Less than 10 players confirmed immediately, several people declined immediately. And most of the player are hesitating with a mark "Maybe" for this. Therefore that brought out what it says in the first paragraph. After captain personally talks with everyone, we finally got 14 people, narrowly 2 lines' player and a coach for this game. Fully aware of the tough temperature, then we start our trip to Boon Rockstar.
Everything seems challenging, it's a painful weekend.
However, this is truly just a start for our miserable experience. Then the whole weekend is about a different type of depression. There is merely only red-eye flight we can choose from Shanghai to Philippine. Departure on 1 a.m. and arrive at 5 a.m. Many of our teammates are taking Saturday's flight to the Philippines, which means they can only sleep 4 hrs in sitting position, and then take a 3-hour car and once arrived they have to join games immediately under 30ish degree's temperature.
After one sleepless night flight, players take a nap on the way to Clark.
We were seeding the last for all women's teams in this year BRS. Indeed we lost all games for our first day with a large gap on points. On the first game of our second day, we played against "Black Widows" which is top seeding team. We thought maybe there's still a chance since they all partied hard last night and still sleepy. But we still lost the game with the poorest number of our entire weekend: 13-1. What's more, it is the only game that we were broadcast online...
Although we won last game of the week and our ranking moved 1 place forward than the previous seeding, we can still feel the pain being skied, being D-ed, being dump far way behind and can not catch up at all. No need to mention the dust all over the field and we protect ourselves every minute from biting by ants.
Travel and improve with teammates, we couldn't be happier
Although we were quite suffered both physically and mentally, more important we got the unique experience to travel with our teammates. and improve together! From this point, all those pains seem not important anymore.
This time both Shanghai men's and Shanghai Women's went to BRC. We know each other, we come from the same city, even we haven't had that much interactions on training but we still become good friends in this trip. we were reliable ride mates, meal-mates, and hangout-mates. If one team is on a by, we will go to cheer for the other team.
Fun thing: Sirens' first-day game finished earlier than Men's team. So almost all the girls came to watchMen's last game and cheer for them. Noticed all girls come to the field, two Beijingpick up players from Beijing shouting from the other side to us: "I SAY SHANGHAI YOU SAY CHUCHAI"
"SHANGHAI——" "CHUCHAI!" "SHANGHAI——" "CHUCHAI!"
After Shanghai girls warmly supported with cheers, and we realized that the initiators are our Beijingbros.
About the game, here is what captains and coach want to say
Except for the friendship with teammates, for the game, we also learned and reflect ourselves a lot. With this bittersweet experience, we realized there is a way to go as a high-level team in Asia. Xing firstly gave some notes and thoughts from our lost experience:
Jessie talked our future focus and direction for improvement in the long run:
Heard we are coming from China especially for this game to prepare WUCC and there is even high schooler in our team, after the short spirit circle speech, Opi Payne especially calls us regroup again and said she really glad could see us here and play against us. "It's not easy to have such a group of people share the same love and spend a lot of money just to go abroad for such a minority's sports." She encouraged us to keep carry on and said she believe we will definitely be better next time.
Just like what Coach Adam said:
Before the tournament started, I expected that Boon Cup would be a difficult tournament for us. We were missing a few ofour strongest handlers. We were going to play against the best teams we’ll face before WUCC. We had a small roster and we weren’t ready for the heat of the Philippines. We were seeded last, and it was very possible that we would lose every game.
At the same time, we had been practicing together for months. We had mostly figured out our vertical stack offense. We have a lot of talented players who have been playing together for years.
So for Boon Cup, I had two main messages for Sirens.
1. “不要有心理负担” 我们并不知道我们打的队伍有多么的优秀，我们也不知道我们自己有多优秀。我们唯一能做的就是尽最大努力去比赛，去做正确的决定，并成为优秀的团队一员。
1. “No expectations.” We don’t know how good the teams we’ll be playing are. We don’t really know how good we are. All we can do is do our best to work hard, make good decisions, and be good teammates.
2. “一切都还只是开始” 我们的目标是打造上海公开赛和世界俱乐部赛的最强阵容。如果能在BRS上面硬一些比赛当然很好，但是更重要的是我们要通过这场比赛学习进步。
2. “This is the beginning.” Our goal is to build the best team possible for Shanghai Open and WUCC. It would be nice to win some games at Boon Cup, but it’s more important for us to learn and improve over the weekend.
While the scores of our games weren’t very impressive, there were a lot of things for us to be happy about. We showed thatwe could run our offense, dumping and swinging and using the break side. All 14 players improved over the weekend. Players figured out that they could get open and make plays against skilled, athletic opponents. Players who played a bit scared at the start of the tournament became more confident and aggressive. In our team circle after the tournament, I told the team that even though we went 1-5, I am more optimistic now than I was before the tournament.
